The Greatest Game Ever Invented

Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented. Arnold Palmer

I never thought I would be a golfer. I enjoy all types of sports, but as a kid I grew up playing baseball and soccer. Baseball was my passion. The cardinal sin was messing up your swing by doing something other than baseball, so no wiffle ball with the neighborhood pals, no fooling around with softball, and no golf. While I learned later in life that I probably wouldn't have ruined by swing for hitting a baseball, just about everything can screw up a golf swing.

Hitting a round ball with a cylindrical bat was natural to me. No matter how hard it came at me, how much it spun or dropped, I could always seem to get a piece of it, and more often than not, make some solid contact and put the ball into play. Some say it's the hardest act in sports. Those who say that, have never picked up a golf club.

Perhaps it's the fact that the ball is stationary. Maybe it's the flat surface of the club's face that is misleading. Or could it be that we're just talking semantics here, I mean, hitting a golf ball is easy...hitting it well, in the right direction, and the proper distance...that's another proposition altogether.

So I thought that we could take the long walk together, cut up about how many balls we lost, and that long putt on 14 that seemed impossible. I could share some of my experience, and dare I say, wisdom, with you about the gentleman's game and share some laughs along the way.

I like to think of myself as a storyteller, a teacher, which basically means that I talk too much and I'm kind of a know-it-all. But that's never shut me down before and I'm not going to stop now. That's what I love about golf, much like life, you prepare as best you can, battle through the tough spots and no matter what, you have to play the ball where it lies (or take your penalty.)

We'll get to the name of the blog in a bit, but let's grab a few balls and head to the range. Our tee time is coming up soon...you don't mind if I take honors do you? I appreciate it. So while you figure out which pocket your tees are in, let me tell you how I came to learn The Uncle Dennis Rule...
